At 16 years of age, I embarked on a 12-week long school science project in an attempt to put to rest the question of how to make homemade soap bubble mixture recipe for big and giant bubbles.

Whilst I succeeded in my investigations, this was 1994 and since then, unfortunately, many of the dishwashing liquids have changed their composition to the point that nowadays most homemade bubble mixes don’t really work very well at all. This caused me a great deal of bubble trouble as since 1999 my entire livelihood has been from performing and teaching with soap bubbles.

Until recently I used dishwashing liquid-based recipes in our hands-on bubble blowing activities. Unfortunately around every 24 months or so, I would turn up to present a bubble blowing activity and the bubble mix wouldn’t perform - my bubble burst!

Of course I'd race down to the supermarket to buy a bunch of new detergents and quickly make up various bubble recipes at various ratios in an attempt to find a via-bubble alternative. But gradually over the years, home-made dishwashing-liquid big bubble recipes were getting worse.
